THE NOBEL
The folks at the Nobel committee must have a rule of some sort that prizes must be awarded each year.
I thought that, on occasion, if they didn't find a particularly worthy recipient, they simply passed.
Maybe I am wrong.
The other morning they awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama.
He was gracious as always in accepting this honour with humility and, it seemed, a little confusion.
I am a huge Barack Obama fan.
I understand the award and its signal for a more hopeful world.
But I think the award was precipitous...uh, a little early for a fellow but nine months into his term.
It's hardly the worst thing that ever happened, but it is peculiar.

I am also an Obama fan, however, this award is beyond silly and a real head shaker. He was nominated for the prize in February 2009, having only been inaugurated as President on January 20, 2009. If he had turned it down I would have thought better of him. I have no doubt that he will achieve works for which he could well deserve the Nobel Prize, but as you said, it certainly was precipitous. One also has to question if the award is still meaningful.

I personally think that Obama is the best thing to happen to the US in decades. I believe that deep inside the man there is a well meaning soul that wants the best for his country and the American people. I think that the good people at the Nobel Peace office want so dearly for this guy to succeed that they were a little too quick to reward the President even before much work has been done. I think that the world in general wants this guy to work some magic and make many things better in the world - even issues that really aren't in his control - including world peace.
