As Rex Murphy said, "The Americans long ago gave up on a Queen and as a consequence they now have Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters." There is not much graciousness left in this old world and certainly not in politics. I think the 74 cents it costs me a year to fund the Monarchy is a small price to pay for what little tradition we have left in this country.

I agree with the person who commented above. Growing up in Vancouver with a British mom and being in contact with British grandparents and other relatives living in England, the royal family was a connection, something we had in common. My mother taught me British history, using the monarchy as a signpost. I have always felt more comfortable in England than in the USA. The monarchy is very much a part of my personal identity. Charles was environmentally sensitive, pro-homeopathy and pro-organic before most people over here had even thought of taking their heads out of their asses. I don't begrudge him the butler who puts toothpaste on his brush every morning and evening. They're also excellent for British tourism. Why the haters? It kills me that people will spend $200 on a pair of designer runners or $20 a week on fancy coffee, but go to pieces at paying less than a buck a year for the royal family. I think those who want to do away with the Monarchy are just those who hate white Christian Europeans. Isn't that racist?
Could we not just bypass this couple and go for the young un? He would certainly make a hit with our young folks and would look far better on the coins as his ears would fit better.
I think the work Charles does with the environment has done well to restore the image of the British monarchy...and Harry's mishaps keep things entertaining!
The comment about the $200 designer runners is apt, however, I don't want my 'personal brand' to have anything to do with the royals. I am the product of French Canadians on my mother's side and a father who came straight from Dublin and I do not in any way, in fact quite the opposite, connect with the royal family. Once the Queen dies, I believe our ties with this outdated hierarchy should die as well -- and my feeling about this has nothing to do with the cost, it's symbolic and I dislike their particular brand of symbolism. It's not being a 'hater' to disagree with pro monarchy sentiments, it's having an opinion. Our identity as a country wouldn't be any less if we lost the Queen, we'd still be grappling with the idea of how we are different from the Americans.

I say, "Long Live the Queen" Of all the world leaders today, she is the most steady, most understanding and - dare I say - most relevant. Her opinions are not swayed by business, drug companies or the who's popular of today. She is steadfast and a strong pillar in today's ever-shifting society and political intrigue. I am proud to be a member of the Dominion of Canada and I am very proud to call her my Queen. May she live a long, long life.
I have more in common with the monarchy than with French-Canadians. And you guys want to separate anyway, right? So you don't really get a say.

Actually, after meeting and chatting with Charles a few years ago made me change my mind about him. He's funny, very witty and an unbelievably intellegent and worldly person and my brief contacts and conversations with him led me to reassess his worth and how much the media distorts and forms our opinions about public figures. I don't think he'll ever be King because the Queen is is very good health but it might be fun to have Harry as a future symbolic head of state. I don't really see what all the fuss is about.....the Royals are only figureheads and as long as Canada remains within the Commonwealth.....why not keep them. They cost a hell of a lot less than our elected officials.
Harry? Don't be killing off, William just yet my friend. (Although I prefer Harry too.) I think Charles would make a wonderful, thoughtful king.
