Fred and Alex Kreklau have been married for 60 years. They are devoted to each other.

Now, the compassionate geniuses at British Columbia's Interior Health Authority have separated this loving couple. The official story is that there is "No Room at the Inn." The mandarins claim they cannot find an accomodation for the two elderly people in one tiny suite in the care homes to which they have now been sent.

This is pathetic bullshit.

It demonstrates the cruelty and incompetence that makes one question the country and time in which we are living.

To make matters worse, this is an exact repeat of an identical situation that took place right here in B.C. 2 years ago. After the media rose an unholy stink about that circumstance, the premier intervened and promised this would never happen again.

Hello?

We cannot find a double bed or a set of twin beds for an elderly couple, but you can bet your ski boots that every perk and luxury will be on full display for the Olympics.

Write your MLA and your Premier. Demand a better British Columbia.

Hey Bob,

Thanks for the comment.

When that first atrocity occured - also in the Interior - some 2 years ago, I went on and on about night after night for weeks on the radio. The result was that dozens of good people e-mailed the nitwits in Victoria.

When the premier finally acted, we felt that we had done some small, good thing.

Bureaucracies are uncaring, unmotivated, often incompetent organizations. The bigger the bureaucracy, the worse it is.

Now you know why I'm a Libertarian at heart!

to look at the situation from reversed.... if the home allowed the elderly couple to live in the tiny suite, i'm sure those 2 would be happy. but if one day someone went to visit, say their children and/or grandchildren, and they saw how small the rooms were (i have no idea what the actual dimensions of the room), i can just see the headlines in the papers, "grams and gramps stuffed in cramped rooms" (terrible, i know, lol).

of course this entire situation can easily be avoided if there was just one more extra room.

Hi Festealth,

EGG-ZACTLY! Just one more room...How difficult a concept is that for our bloated regional health Bureaucracies?

One less Vice-President of Cups & Saucers, one less machine, cellphone, blackberry and - Presto-Chango! - another room for a frail and ailing senior.

In response to the "KREKLAU" tragedy...I am another daughter amongst 5 siblings who saw first hand what transpired in this family...First, Dad was placed in a facility by the "sisters" (Angela & Yvonne) because they could not care for Dad at home any longer. Secondly, our mother Alex was placed in a facility by the "sisters" (Angela & Yvonne) because they did not want to care for Mom at home any longer. Thirdly, in Oct/06 the whole family was informed that there were 2 rooms available and suitable for both of our parents in a facility in Summerland...the "sisters" (Angela & Yvonne) refused the rooms that were available for our parents to move into. My brothers and I believe this solution would have been beneficial for all involved especially our parents, but, our parents were not given the opportunity to make this decision for themselves.

in regards to the last statement, I know for a a FACT that the woman who wrote that....lived in Westbank..which is a few minutes away from Peachland where the couple resided....Yet Did she or the other two brothers go and help their parents???No it was a chore for "J" to do anything for her parents, she wouldn't help with grocery shopping, or taking her parents to doctor appointments or anything....and what did they do when they took care of Their parents?....THEY withheld their medications! and could have caused them serious problems... the 'Sisters" were the only kids of Fred and Alex that did anything for them. Shame on those Three children for treating their elderly parents so horribly....SHAME SHAME SHAME!
