Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear.

It is when power is wedded to chronic fear that it becomes formidable.

You see what power is -- holding someone else's fear in your hand and showing it to them!

Perhaps Bhutto fulfilled her destiny -- as she saw her father and brothers die. She will become a martyr, more in death than she was in life.

For me her death represents a loss of hope. I feel a great sadness for Pakistan, a country that has never really known democracy. To a greater or lesser degree, the religious fanatics have infiltrated all levels of government and the military. Their power is gained through fear -- their influence is undeniable. Education is needed so families do not turn to madrassas, which are a breeding ground for fanatacism.
