We Need Doctors, But We won't let them Work

It is good to see a foreign trained doctor fighting for her right to practice in B.C. It is high time that this happened.

Unfortunately, she is using the BC HUman Rights Tribunal as her forum. It may be that she no other recourse.

We would have hoped to see this kind of case in the Supreme Court. The BC College of Physicians and Surgeons has much to answer for in this matter.

I have mixed feelings about this news story. First and foremost, the fact that her credentials are recognized by the EU leads me to believe that she would be super qualified to work here. I've long felt that these professional bodies are often running a nice little racket, protecting their own.

Unfortunately the BCHRT is a much bigger racket, full of incompetent, corrupt boobs whose sole measure of justice is dependent on the prevailing Politically Correct Winds of the day. A favourable ruling for Ms. Fauerbach is great but won't dismiss my loathing for the BCHRT one little bit.

My brother-in-law is a foreign trained doctor (gastroenterologist) who holds a fellowship at Brooklyn Interfaith Hospital in New York. His fellowship will end this year and he is currently entertaining jobs at hospitals around the U.S. with salaries in excess of half a million dollars. He is not a U.S. citizen (although he does not plan on returning to his country of origin and will eventually apply for U.S. citizenship). The process for him to practice in the states was not unduly arduous, and while foreign trained doctors definitely pay their dues (they are often quite overworked), the end result can be very satisfying. The protectionism needs to stop as we are clearly in need of physicians.
