Time to Change

The numbers are telling and chilling and unavoidable.

Among Indians 25 to 64 years of age, 38 per cent have failed to complete high school. For non-aboriginals, the figure is 15 per cent. Only three per cent of registered Indians have a university degree, compared to 18 per cent for the general population.

The system that has been in place for some time now doesn't work.

The "system" is that Ottawa gives band councils the cash and the local bands, rife with corruption and nepotism, dispense the funds.

Except that nobody knows how, where or when.

Calvin Helin, a Vancouver aboriginal lawyer and author, says its way past time to change "the system" and get the money where it needs to be - in the hands of the future students.

In addition to being part of the news story quoted above, Mr. Helin is the co-author of an editorial on the subject.

Read it.

It's your money and our future.

His proposal sounds like the voucher system proposed for the US.

It would probably be an improvement over what we have, but not a panacea. For example, it offers nothing to resolve the problem of obtaining a K-12 education before entering the post secondary system.

Thanks for posting on this important issue!

David I read the editorial. The more I read the sicker I felt. Another solution to the problem. I agree we have wasyed millions or billions on this problem. I wonder if the problem exists because we give special status to a group of people.

Why dont we recognize all white males between 50 and 70 years old. Ill bet that we could come up with statistics that should support the creation of special status for that group. The list could be endless.

Why cant natives be treated the same as the rest of us. Let them be screwed by the CRA . Let them try to figure out how to live on the income they earn. Let them realize that current imigration policies will cost them their jobs.

Let them enjoy all the benefits of being a Canadian without a hyphen.
