When Will My $20 Book Cost $20?

It's not often I will agree with an agent of the Government.

But when Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says that he would like to see retailers reflect the strength of the Canadian dollar in their pricing, of course, I'm cheering him on.

I am still waiting for a paperback book that costs $17.50 US to stop costing $23.95 CAN.

Waiting, but not holding my breath.

Undoubtedly Canadian retailers will use every excuse in the book to explain why their prices haven't come down. But they're mostly all nonsense.

What they are indicative of is the lack of competitiveness of Canadian businesses. I sometimes wonder if many of them are still in denial that Canadians can access non-Canadian websites ... like Amazon.com!!!

How can they possibly drop their prices? The US price is clearly printed on the book or magazine. Canadian retailers will say they can't change that.

As Pelalusa wrote, order from US website where often there are no shipping charges. If enough of us vote with our wallets, Canadian retailers will have to change. They certainly aren't listening to our requests.

In fact, I always buy from Amazon.com, never Amazon.ca.
