Pahik Abhou

Should Canadian colleges be more tolerant of Islamic fundamentalism than Cairo's universities?

That's the question being asked by Lysiane Gagnon in her Globe column today about the niqab and the burka.

The top Islamic cleric in Egypt said students and teachers at Cairo's Al-Azhar University would not be allowed to wear face veils in classrooms and dorms on the grounds they had “nothing to do with Islam.”

So why is it OK in Canadian Universities?

A woman in a French-language class for immigrants is fighting her expulsion from class.

Read the details of what really went on in that classroom...

Then, tell me about the limts, if any, of cultural and religious accomodation.

All this while I sit in a cafe at the Langley Airport and watch a steady stream of Arabic lookinbg aviation students parade by the windows going between classroom and hands on aviation training . . .

Oh yeah, they're not planning another 9-1-1, no no . . . duh!

This is the result of our poorly crafted constitution, which in its 28 years laying out the law of the land has altered the look of this country to the point that the previous 106 years of the nations development have been made irrelevant. Simply put we have made our bed and now we have to sleep in in. We are obliged through our laws to accommodate everybody for anything in the name of multiculturalism. If Mounties can wear turbans and you can bring weapons into the courtroom then how can you tell some woman to not wear a burka to class.

Don't blame an individual or some group for exploiting the rules that were created and accepted by us, the people. Blame the rules and our lack of wisdom. Its the 1982 constitution written by the Trudeau-ites that has the fundamental flaws enshrined into it that's the root of the problems regarding the legal necessity to accommodate. Go to the people find what the majority of citizens want their nations laws to say, and rewrite the lousy document.

I too agree with the previous two posters. Canada needs to smarten up before it is too late. Enough!
