Is the Daily Paper Finished? There are no more Fish to wrap, so what purpose will is serve?

You will see to the right a new survey.

Is is just me, or is the newly revised, revamped and reconfigured Vancouver Sun basically devoid of news?

Or is this just a slow news period?

I appreciate that the paper did a big themed exercise on the economy and that they covered the nightmare from every imaginable angle (except, of course, how the sex trade is flourishing or languishing as a result of the...wait for it...downturn.)

BUT.

I didn't find one story, not one, worthy of blogggismentis.

One friend says that the Sun now considers its biggest rival - and model - 24 Hours.

Yikes!

That would 'splain a lot.

I suppose like many of you I could cancel the daily delivery and save all that paper recycling.

Take the survey.

Help me understand what the Captains of Communication think they are doing.

The new Sun looks to me like a website.

I haven't liked the Sun for years. Nor much of the press, really. Journalism is a dying art, if not already dead. In the US, a recent survey found that 68% of Americans believe the press is trying to rig the election. And subscriptions are falling off. Well, duh.

It doesn't have to be this way; if journalists would only do journalism, there'd be hope. But most ink-stained wretches are either sensationalizing or editorializing (or cutting and pasting from news feeds and press releases), and the facts, and fair reporting, are sparse.

I suppose they can't be blamed; they're just trying to fill pages with stuff that will sell, but you'd think there'd be a market for the good old-fashioned genuine article.

One difference - 24 hours doesn't run full front page free ads for Non-Partisan Association mayoralty candidate Peter Ladner! :)

I love 24!

It's compact (and can easily be read in 10 minutes), gets you the news you need, plus a few lifestyle and entertainment article...and best of all, it's F-R-E-E!!!

And they have hard Sudoku puzzles on Friday (and sometimes Thursday).

If I want to know more in-depth information and analysis, there's always the internet.

I love the Seattle P.I. and you can blog or comment on all editorials or columnist's articles, even some major news stories. Not so with the Sun and province, where they censor everything!
